Ideas on Eating More Veggies at Home

Making it affordable:

  • Purchase what is in season. Fresh fruits and vegetables are usually less expensive when in season and offer their highest nutritional benefits when eaten fresh.
  • Consider growing your own fruits and vegetables in a garden at home.
  • Buy canned and frozen fruits and vegetables. They are generally affordable and don't spoil as quickly.

For kids:

  • When ordering a kids meal, substitute healthier fruits or vegetables in place of things like french fries.
  • Help your kids prepare a large batch of trail mix using seeds, nuts and dried fruit. You can keep this on hand so they always have a quick healthy snack available.
  • Try topping yogurt with some fresh fruits like strawberries and bananas or your favorite granola.

Family meals:

  • You can easily add vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned) to soups, stews, pasta dishes, omelets, sandwiches, and stir-fry dishes.
  • Don’t limit your salads; feel free to add more fruits and vegetables such as peas, corn, beans, strawberries and oranges.
